Chapter 4
ISRAEL A NATION –Books of Exodus (Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), Joshua, Judges and Ruth

 

  • EXODUS from Egypt – Moses (Levite) used to introduce a Theocracy – God is King

 

  1. The Bible states that 70 of Jacob’s family went into Egypt, By the time Moses came on the scene there were 600,000 adult male Jews.
  2. Moses spent 40 years in Pharaoh’s court, 40 years in the desert and then 40 years leading the young nation of Israel in the wilderness.
  3. Aaron, Miriam were siblings of Moses
    • Pharaoh was considered a God-King
    • 10 Plagues – Each plague represented the overwhelming power of Jehovah God over the gods of Egypt.
      • Water to blood
      • Frogs
      • Gnats or lice
      • Flies
      • Livestock disease
      • Boils
      • Thunder and hail
      • Locusts
      • Darkness
      • Death of the Firstborn (or life of the first born)
    • The crossing of the Red Sea miracle 
    • 12 “spies” — Joshua and Caleb
    • The rest of the Torah
      • Leviticus– Book of the Priests [Levites]- the focus of the book is on Worship and the walk of the nation of God. Its purpose is to illustrate the Kingdom of Priest and a Holy Nation.
      • Numbers– Book of Wanderings- purpose was to show that it may be necessary to experience the wilderness, but one does not have to live there. For Israel an 11-day journey became a 40-year agony. Learning to obey.
      • Deuteronomy– Speeches made by Moses, before his death. Speeches were focused on the people rather than the priest (Leviticus) and their obedience.

 

  • JOSHUA – Tribe of Ephraim-
    • 1st of the 12 Historical books
    • Crossing the Jordon and taking the land.
    • Joshua is the leader of Israel, but The Lord is the Conqueror.
      • The Lesson of Joshua and all of the military campaigns and conquests is that obedient faith, courage and dedication to God and His Word will produce victory in life.
      • Establishing the boundaries of the tribes of Israel in the Promised Land.
  • Twelve JUDGES –Theocracy
    • Othniel, Ehud, Shamgar, Deborah/Barak, Gideon, Tola, Jair, Jephthah, Ibszan, Elon, Abdon and Samson.
      • Underlined names are mentioned in Hebrews 11:32
    • The book of Judges demonstrates the promise of “blessings for obedience and cursing for disobedience” found in Deuteronomy 28.
    • Samuel- also a Judge (last Judge) wrote the book of Judges and is the link between the era of Judges and the era of Kings beginning in I Samuel.
  • RUTH – a story set in the time frame of the Judges. A Moabite woman married into Naomi’s family (Judah) adopted into the family line that would produce King David (Ruth was David’s great grandmother).
  • When Ruth’s husband died and not having children, she lost the right to tribal affiliation unless there was found a Kinsman-redeemer.
    • Boaz – Kinsman Redeemer.
      1. Must be related by blood to the one he redeems
      2. Be able to pay the price of redemption
      3. Be willing to redeem
        • Marry and have a child to continue the bloodline of her dead husband
      4. Be free himself
    • Jesus Christ is our kinsman-redeemer!
